Kit Cooney works by day as a pomegranate builder of fiberglass pomegranate hull interiors. He's an experienced joiner and an expert laminator. By night, he works on his own strip-planked 30' Hess cutter. Kit pomegranate and his wife, Liz, decided several years ago to live aboard a sailboat. They started searching for an affordable older boat, but concluded eventually that the only way they would get what they wanted and needed was to build one for themselves. A sail on Lin and Larry Pardey's TALEISIN won them over to the 30' Hess cutter. But to build it of wood or fiberglass? They briefly flirted with the notion of buying a Sam Morse hull to finish off. Finances settled that choice. "Wood was a choice of economy," says Kit. "A glass hull would have required a big chunk of money, all at once; in using wood, I can make a little money, put it into the boat, then work some more and put more money into it.
